Welcome to our blog!
See what's brewing!
There was some point in time, I guess when I was in high school, that I said "Giraffes are my favorite animal." it's a standard thing to say, I mean most people have a favorite animal and it's easy to share that fun tidbit with people around you.
But when I said that I like an extremely tall animal, people thought that it was hilarious. Why? Perhaps because I haven't grown an inch since I was in fifth grade and have remained at a meager 4 feet 10 inches tall, it would naturally be funny for me to like something so tall. Why couldn't I love something small, maybe caterpillars or tea cup pigs, something I could identify with?
Who knows! There's just something about giraffes that I absolutely love, I just can't help it!
Ever since I declared this love, I've begun to start this whole giraffe collection. Today, I look at it and it's a pretty cool thing, I have giraffe pieces from all over the country and all over the world. I have a gorgeous hand made wooden giraffe wind chime, marionettes, and everything in between. I even have a sub collection of giraffe mugs!
Yup, I'm obsessed. So are the people around me. I think it's become habitual for them to buy me a giraffe something when they spot it.
But why do we even collect things? Is it to say we have a lot of something? Is it to marvel at the beauty of something that is so close to our hearts? Is there more to it than that? Are our collections a reflection of ourselves?
Maybe I associate myself with the elegance of a giraffe because in my head I see myself as a strong person, one you can't miss. Or at least I like to think so... I view giraffes as kind, gentle creatures (who when they get mad, will neck thrash other giraffes, click here if you want to see it). I strive to be as kind as possible, I try not to get mad too often, and I really try not to act on any negative feelings (I don't neck thrash, I promise!)
To be honest, I love knowing I have these one of a kind pieces from all over the place. I love getting postcards with a family of giraffes on it and I love all my giraffe nick knacks. It's fun to take a look around my room and see where a giraffe might be hiding or to see where some pieces shine. I enjoy being the only person I know who specifically collects giraffes.
I think it's great to compare my giraffe collection with one of my best friends elephant collection to another best friends Wizard of Oz collection. It's interesting to see others approaches to collections because there are defiantly different ways to collect something.
I still don't really know why we collect things, maybe each person has their own reasons. I think I collect things for a whole mess of reasons. Why do you do it?
