Mason Jar: Part 1

Mason jars are such a great blank canvas to craft with. They're so versatile, they can be dressed up or they can be extra fun! There's really a lot you can do with them! For this first craft, I wanted to play with chalkboard paint on a glass surface. While it's possible, it is a little tricky & you need some patience as well as time.

What you need:

  • Mason Jar- Craft stores sell these without the raised writing on the glass, you want to buy the ones with a smooth surface
  • Chalkboard paint
  • Painters tape
  • Paint brush

Step 1

  • You want to start off with just making sure the surface of the mason jar is clean & dry
  • Then, take your painters tape & lay out a square onto the mason jar.
  • Make sure the tape is smooth on the glass
  • You can decide the size of your square or rectangle & can make adjustments as needed before you start painting

Step 2

  • Now it's time to paint!
  • Your first coat of paint should be going in one direction only.
  • You want to make sure you cover the entire open section with a nice layer of the paint
  • According to my chalkboard paint instructions, I had to wait 1 hour in between coats. I would wait longer though!  When I tried to do my second coat after 1 hour, it was still slightly wet which pulled up some of my first layer of paint
  • I strongly suggest waiting longer than an hour.
  • The second coat, should go in the opposite direction than the first. Be very gentle even if you waited longer than 1 hour & think it's completely dry just to be on the safe side.
  • You can do a third coat, however my paint said 2 coats would be fine!

Step 3

  • When all your coats are completely dry (I would wait a few hours), gently pull off the painters tape.
  • You'll get pretty nice lines- mine weren't perfect but I'm ok with that!
  • Then, follow the instructions on your chalkboard paint- it should tell you to completely cover the dried paint with chalk, wash it off & then you can use it!!

I love these- they're great for so many reasons! Use them in the kitchen to store goods when you can, or use them to store your craft items like buttons, ribbon or more! You can change up the labels whenever you  need to! These also make wonderful gifts- fill them with cookie mix for a friend. Or use them as a get well present & fill it with things to brighten somebody's day! The options are endless & we can't wait to hear how you used yours so don't forget to share with us!
