When I gained the weight I didn't want last year, I had no idea where to even start to lose it. Yes the simple things like stop eating crappy foods and working out more were the obvious reasons, but I needed more of a plan.
I decided to try Weight Watchers, a program I didn't really know much about but figured I'd give it a solid try. My sister and I signed up together for a 3 month trial and I liked having somebody in my corner who was doing the same things I was doing. I think having support from those you're close with when you're making life style changes is important!
I have to say, I lost a good amount of my weight from Weight Watchers. The biggest thing I took from it was portion control. That's what I loved about this program. I never want to feel guilty for eating a slice of pizza or having some mac and cheese. With Weight Watchers you can have pizza and it's ok!.. just don't have 3 slices with extra cheese.
I never want to feel bad about eating ice cream or enjoying a glass of beer after work once in a while. But with Weight Watchers, I was able to track what I was eating and how much of it I was consuming. I also enjoyed that if I used all of my allotted points for a day but was still hungry, I could munch on fruits and veggies for no points at all!
I never felt hungry when I was doing Weight Watchers.
It honestly got me into really great eating habits. I packed my lunch every night after I ate dinner and loaded it with extra fruit, carrot sticks, celery, cherry tomatoes and more! I realized how much I actually enjoyed snacking on these foods. They filled me up and I wasn't needing a sugary snack as often. It led me to snack on other things like sunflower seeds and I started making the most amazing smoothies nearly every day. I took advantage of their recipes too, which offered really great alternatives and some smart ideas for helping you make a healthier meal.
I only did the program for the 3 months, I didn't got to any support groups or anything like that, but I did use their free app to help track my food intake. I felt that after the 3 months, I got a good sense of what my portions should be like and what to choose to eat instead of junk food. But most of all, I think it's a great program to help guide you to lose weight. I never felt bad about myself, even when I was eating some Nutella, because it was ok. A year later, I still am aware of what portion of food is right for me and over eating has become less of an issue.
I think those are some important things to remember when starting to get into healthier habits. Don't crash diet and don't deprive yourself of all your cravings. Just learn to control how much of them you're actually consuming. Enjoy it when you do eat chocolate cake or a bowl of pasta. Never feel bad or guilty when you sneak something like that in!!!
That was my first approach to getting into a healthier lifestyle. For me it worked and I enjoyed it. It might not work for everybody, but I think it's worth trying! It taught me a lot of great things that I actively use in my life to this day!
Stick with me as I continue to tell you how I began my journey towards a healthier lifestyle and how I'm still making improvements & changes a year later!
